Smoky Corridor....

I found out from my friend that the Hungry Ghosts Month just started. That explains all the burning of joss papers and candles all over the place. The whole night I was walking around trying to "siam" all of them. Mainly cos I was told might offend the spirits if I happen to step onto the offerings. Also its because of the smoke. Ah well, it happens once a year so yeah, it does not bother me much.
However, I was walking around with a friend at about 5am this morning when I pointed out some flickering object at a 6th floor corridor. He told me it could be a candle, but the light was definitely too bright for it to be a candle. So went kay-poed and went up and saw this woman burning joss paper. Ok... its that time of the month... but excuse me lady, it 5 AM!!! And here u are burning joss paper in the common corridor?
I am sure there is a better timing to do that right? But at 5AM?! If I were to be her neighbour, I'll scream!!! I mean, just imagine, smoke seeping into your unit while u are in the middle of deep sleep. Or you walking through all that smoke right after you stepped out of ya door, going to work.
At that point of time, personally, I don't mind. But I really pity her neighbours. Well, I cannot stop her from doing that, it would be insensitive of me, wouldn't it? BUt yeah... I really pity her neighbours. All the smoke they have to put up with so early in the morning. In fact, I myself was coughing. All that smoke... geez...
Ah well, I am at home now. Smoking my last cigarette before I go to bed.

joss burning is such an archaic practice which is not relevant in our modern society today anymore.

Religion/racial practices are sensitive issues to tackle. Something like someone complaining about the malay wedding kompang being played too loudly or the Chinese funeral band is making a lot of noise. I guess for the sake of racial harmony, ppl put up with such stuff and complain quietly.
